Commercial Chain Link Garbage Enclosure Gate Upgrade in Vancouver, BC Upgrading an Existing Garbage Enclosure with a New Double-Swing Chain Link Gate

Commercial Garbage Enclosure Gate Upgrade in Vancouver, BC
Commercial garbage and waste areas need more than somewhere to store bins.
A properly designed enclosure helps define the waste area, control access and keep garbage and recycling containers separated from surrounding parking, service and pedestrian areas.
For this recent project in Vancouver, BC, Wind Rose Fencing was hired to upgrade an existing garbage enclosure where the customer wanted the existing gate replaced with a more suitable chain link gate system.
Our work included removing and disposing of the existing gate and supplying and installing a new double-swing chain link gate.
The finished system features black chain link mesh with galvanized steel gate framing, supported by new posts that were base-plated and mechanically anchored to the existing concrete.
The result is a practical commercial gate system designed around the existing garbage enclosure and site conditions.
Why Upgrade an Existing Garbage Enclosure Gate?
Garbage enclosure gates can experience considerable use.
Depending on the property, they may regularly be opened for building maintenance, garbage collection, recycling services and other operations.
Over time, an existing gate may become damaged, difficult to operate or simply no longer meet the property’s needs.
In this case, the customer wanted to upgrade the existing gate system rather than leave the previous configuration in place.
Replacing a gate also provides an opportunity to evaluate the opening, posts, available operating space and surrounding surface before installing the new system.
Removing the Existing Gate
The first part of the project involved removing the existing gate.
When replacing commercial fencing, proper removal is important because the new installation needs to work with the existing site rather than simply being attached wherever the previous system was located.
The old gate was removed and disposed of before installation of the new gate system.
This allowed the new double-swing gate and supporting posts to be positioned for the existing garbage enclosure opening.
Why a Double-Swing Chain Link Gate?
A double-swing gate uses two individual gate leaves that meet in the centre of the opening.
This configuration is useful for many commercial applications because it can provide a wider clear opening without requiring one very large gate leaf.
For a garbage enclosure, that wider opening can be particularly useful when bins need to be moved in and out or when waste collection requires access to the enclosure.
Double-swing chain link gates are commonly used for:
* Garbage and recycling enclosures
* Commercial service areas
* Industrial properties
* Storage compounds
* Equipment areas
* Warehouse yards
* Vehicle access points
The appropriate gate configuration depends on the opening size, available swing space, surface conditions and how the area will be used.
Black Chain Link Mesh with Galvanized Steel Framing
For this Vancouver project, the new gates were constructed using black chain link mesh with galvanized steel framing.
This creates a distinctive commercial appearance while retaining the strength and practicality of a steel chain link gate system.
The galvanized framework provides the structural gate frame, while the black chain link mesh creates visual contrast and integrates with the surrounding enclosure.
Chain link is particularly practical for commercial garbage enclosures because it provides a defined physical barrier while maintaining visibility and airflow through the enclosure.
Base-Plated Posts Anchored to Existing Concrete
One of the important installation details on this project was the post mounting system.
The garbage enclosure was located on an existing concrete surface.
Instead of excavating through the existing concrete to install conventional concrete-set posts, the new gate posts were installed using steel base plates mechanically anchored to the existing concrete.
Base-plated chain link posts can be a practical solution for certain commercial applications where suitable existing concrete is already present.
Common applications can include:
* Garbage enclosures
* Warehouse interiors
* Commercial storage enclosures
* Loading areas
* Service areas
* Equipment enclosures
* Existing concrete slabs
However, base-plated posts are not automatically the correct solution for every fence or gate.
Gate dimensions, loads, existing concrete conditions, post specifications and the intended use of the opening all need to be considered when determining an appropriate installation method.
Commercial Gates Need Proper Support
A gate places different demands on a fence system than a stationary fence section.
Gate posts support moving components and are subjected to forces each time the gates are opened and closed.
This becomes increasingly important as gate leaves become larger or heavier.
For that reason, commercial chain link gate installations should consider the complete system — posts, mounting method, gate frames, hinges, latching hardware, opening dimensions and surrounding conditions.
A gate should not be treated as simply another section of chain link fence.
Why Chain Link Works Well for Garbage Enclosures
Chain link fencing is commonly used around commercial service and waste areas because of its practical characteristics.
Visibility
Unlike a completely solid enclosure, standard chain link mesh maintains visibility through the fence. This can make it easier for property personnel to see the condition of the area without opening the gates.
Airflow
The open mesh construction allows airflow through the enclosure.
Durable Steel Construction
Chain link fence systems use steel mesh, framework and hardware designed for exterior fencing applications.
Repairability
If one component is damaged, portions of a chain link system can often be repaired or replaced without rebuilding the entire enclosure.
Gate Flexibility
Chain link fencing can accommodate pedestrian gates, single-swing gates and double-swing gates depending on how the enclosure needs to operate.
These characteristics make chain link a versatile option for commercial garbage, recycling and service areas.
Garbage Enclosures Can Also Be Upgraded for Privacy
Not every property wants its waste containers completely visible.
Where appropriate, an existing or new chain link garbage enclosure can also incorporate privacy screening or other compatible screening solutions.
Privacy screening can reduce direct visibility into the enclosure and create a more uniform appearance from surrounding areas.
However, adding solid or semi-solid screening changes how wind interacts with a fence or gate. The existing framework, posts, gate design and site exposure should therefore be considered before adding screening.
Repair, Upgrade or Replace?
An older commercial enclosure does not always require complete replacement.
Depending on its condition, Wind Rose Fencing can evaluate whether the property needs:
A repair — when damage is localized and the remaining system is serviceable.
An upgrade — when the existing enclosure can remain but gates, mesh, posts or other components need improvement.
A replacement — when the existing system is no longer suitable for the property’s requirements or condition.
For this Vancouver project, the customer’s requirement was specifically to upgrade the gate system, allowing the enclosure to receive a new double-swing chain link gate configuration without unnecessarily turning the project into something it did not need to be.
Chain Link Solutions for Commercial Properties
Garbage enclosures are only one application for commercial chain link fencing.
The same fundamental system can be adapted for:
* Warehouse security enclosures
* Industrial perimeter fencing
* Commercial storage areas
* Equipment compounds
* Loading and service areas
* Restricted-access areas
* Commercial pedestrian gates
* Vehicle gates
* Existing fence repairs
* Fence modifications and security upgrades
This versatility is one of the reasons chain link fencing continues to be widely used across commercial and industrial properties.
Why Choose Wind Rose Fencing?
Wind Rose Fencing is a family-owned and operated Canadian company specializing in professional chain link fence solutions for commercial, industrial and institutional properties.
Our experience includes new fence installations, commercial gates, security enclosures, base-plated fence systems, concrete-set fencing, repairs, modifications and perimeter security upgrades.
For an existing property like this Vancouver garbage enclosure, our objective is to understand what is already there, what needs to change and what chain link solution is appropriate for the required application.
Rather than approaching every project the same way, the installation is planned around the existing site conditions, intended use and required gate or fence configuration.
